But they look like Death Eater robes.

Christev picked out black-on-black brocade she wanted for her robes and a blue satin lining (which is folded up on the end of the ironing board.)  And I was thinking as I was cutting out the hood here, that despite the bright blue lining - they are going to look like DE robes.

I've only partially started my violet linen robes.  I think I'm going to add lace and a cutesy crocheted neckline.  So while Christev will show up to the Hogsmeade Witches Weekend as a Death Eater-wannabe, I'll look like a friend of Umbridge.  I'm not sure which one will instill more fear into people.

On a side note, I have the time and ability to make robes and cloaks.  So if you want something made, contact me at my email or shoot me a message on lj.  Christev wanted a hybrid between the two, so she's getting a full length robe, with long witchy pendant sleeves, a hood, and a throat clasp.  I also have a few Mischief Managed capes already made, including a gorgeous Navy Merino wool cape lined with featherweight lavender silk and hemmed entirely by hand.

Photograph was taken by a very ignored husband.  Between the writing and the sewing he gets very little time.

It's the smallest of the three bedrooms and it feels like it's getting smaller. You can't see into the closet, and that's a very good thing. I have all our historical reenacting costumes hanging there... it's uh... yikes

I'll post pics when I'm done. Christev is uber-excited. She'll kill me if I don't post pics. That and I need to send her fabric clippings so she can choose what to wear beneath her robes and match.

I'm not going to Azkatraz, and I'm not 100% certain when it is. But I'll take a commission. That doesn't bother me.

Everyone wants pieces of Droxy. I understand.

Actually, I went to a HP DFW meeting where Steve Vander Ark gave two presentations. It was a very geeky-fun time. Fasicnating stuff too.

But the company last night floored me.

OK- so this is a commission. Cool. =)

Azkatraz will start 7/12 amd end 7/21 for me. =)

Yes, this is commission. I have a few finished pieces but not a shopful. And honestly, I don't expect to be overwhelmed with commissions, but if I am, I just won't accept them. I won't take what I can't deliver on, that's just not how you do things. But even if I don't get a commission, I have stacks of fabric and ...urges... That, and I just opened an etsy shop. I've never done this before so we'll see how it goes.

I sometimes write assuming mind readers. The folks hubby had over were here very late last night. Late nights wear me out.

I'd love to know where you get your silk and how much it costs? My local fabric store only stocks Silk Dupioni at $30 metre- $15 on sale.

Date: 1 June 2009 12:09 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] apollinav.livejournal.com
The lavender silk I used is not dupioni and the fabric stores around me only stock that or shantung - which looks off to me, even if it is silk vs. polyester.

I only had a limited bit of the lavender, so I maximized it in the cape, but originally it came off a bolt of white from dharmatrading.com and a friend of mine dyed it. It really is gorgeous and luminous.

Ah, must get together some others and order from Dharma. Do you know if silk is sold at Pennsic? cheaply?

Anything can be found at Pennsic.

Anything.

But i've not been, so I don't know about prices. I did buy out the bolt on the navy merino wool used in that cape at Gulf Wars. I found it at an absurd price that I'll not likely ever find again.

I wondered about the Merino wool.

Funny story actually... well, if you're in the sca you'd understand.

So we have a Nissan Sentra and a historical tent from Panther Primatives. Mind you, loading the Sentra with everything two people need for a full week at Gulf Wars means you're banging knees and elbows. That, and I shopped like a demon.

Last day they were there the fabric shop that made me weak in the knees started making crazy-mad offers to unload the stuff before they went back. I was highly suspicious. I even pulled out my lighter for a burn test. Even though it 'felt' right. So when I came back to camp lugging this massive yardsized trashbag full of the remainder of the bolt, Hubby looked at me scandalized. 'Where are we going to put that?' I eyed him in a manner that made him feel most uncomfortable. I would have left him there too... but a friend of ours actually put our tent in their trailer for us, just so I could get my wool back. 16mutherfuckingyards at 60 inches wide. I was not leaving without it.

You'll love it, and you'll overspend on everything. You already know you're not going to see everything, so just go with it. And ask your girlfriends what they've seen and where they got the best deals that way you're not traipsing all over. I wasn't in the market to buy furniture, but I bought two chairs. Not the a-typical pseudo SCA 'throwns' but really awesome reproduction (it's slipping my mind... later I'll exclaim the name it's from some English cathedral...) pieces. I bought two for $400? They're $300 a piece normally. They were the floormodels/chairs of the maker that he and his wife had used for the last several years. She had nagged him to make new ones so he was selling their old ones. I only learned this in conversation, it wasn't advertised. They broke down flat so I could totally justify buying them, and they look great in the house. Nothing wrong with them at all. Nice cherry too. But yeah... there are deals to be had all over. Talk to your merchants. Figure out in advance what you're in the market for. And rely on friends from your shire/barony. HAVE FUN!!! I iz jelous.

If I didn't have to have my fingers on the keyboard to type, I'd be running around the room squeeeing!!! That brocade is absolutely luscious. And once the picture is full-sized, you can really see the beautiful lining material! Uber-excited, heck yeah!!!!

And that lavender-lined cape you've got up on etsy is gorgeous (the blue one too, but I've seen those pics already).

Hey, I'm okay being a DE wannabe... maybe people will think I'm all ambiguous, you know, like pre DH Snape! No?

The brocade is gorgeous. I'm 80% done with the lining. I started with that first once all the pieces were cut out. I bought JUST ENOUGH fabric. So my gustimating was good, which was really excellent because that was the last of the black brocade they had, and I'd have to travel to their Minden store to pick more up. Not that Minden is far mind you, just inconvenient. But it all worked out, so it's a moot point. I have scraps left over. Not really enough to do anything with, though probably a sweet drawstring purse. The blue fabric is kinda pissing me off. We went with the thinest/lightest and it's moving and bunching all over the place. There are a few tricks for that, it's just making me grumble. Stupid fabric. Be careful Chris, it snags like nobody's business. And I discovered that I'll have to steam it in the shower instead of iron it. I put the iron on the lowest delicate setting and it still discolored the fabric and ate some of the sheen. The brocade took it like a champ, but that blue is sensitive. Just something to note if you want to press it out.

You'll be styling. Death Eater or no. Keep 'em guessing.

(I can't believe you know this movie!)

It's a movie about race relations in the 1960s. Of course I've seen it. It's not really a Western. I mean, nothing in the plot has to do with the Wild West. It could have been set anywhere. That's why there's all those lines in it about the Sherriff, which I'll not repeat here.

We watched it as an office not that long ago.
